Paul Finkelman to speak at Jewish Ferndale

«Supreme Injustice: How The Supreme Court Protected Slavery, and How Historians Have Protected the Image of the Court.»'

This talk, based on his recent book, Supreme Injustice: Slavery in the Nation's Highest Court (Harvard University Press, 2018), this talk explores the personal relationship to slavery of Chief Justice John Marshall, long hidden by his biographers, and how that relationship affected his decision making. The talk will also discuss the two other major justices of this period, Joseph Story and Chief Justice Roger B. Taney. Dr. Finkelman, who is the president of Gratz College in Greater Philadelphia, received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and was later a Fellow in Law and History at Harvard Law School. He taught for many years in law schools and history departments before moving to Gratz, the oldest Jewish liberal arts college in the US.

No Charge — light refreshments

Paul Finkelman is also scheduled to speak at the Charles Wright Museum in Detroit on Tuesday, January 15.
