Stefen J. Welch was born and raised in Detroit, and continues to call Motown home. He currently serves as the Director of Diversity and Inclusion for the Quicken Loans Family of Companies and is a part-time faculty member at his alma mater, Oakland University. Whether in the classroom teaching students the art of public speaking, or in the boardroom leading a Q&L brainstorming session, Stefen always kicks off his meetings with music. Jay Z + Beyonce, Janis Joplin or The Beatles are usually in the mix.
Coupling his passion for community development with an early love of beats, rhythms and harmonies – Stefen knows there’s one thing that can bring any audience together: great music.
As a young child, Stefen’s parents grew tired of him beating on their pots and pans, so they bought him his first drum set. This led to Stefen becoming the full-time drummer at The Historic Little Rock Baptist Church (Detroit, MI) at the age of nine.
Sundays were reserved for gospel, but Monday through Saturday was dedicated to the sounds of Michael and Janet Jackson, Luther Vandross, Diana Ross and The O’Jays.
Detroit and music have become two of Stefen’s greatest passions and influences. Man in the Mirror, Wake Up Everybody, What’s Going On and We Are the World are songs that Stefen believes berthed his participation in community engagement and speaking up for others as a kid. That same kid from the west side continues to use those influences to make an impact in the city he loves.
Stefen holds a master’s in Community Development from The University of Detroit Mercy. He is also an alumnus of Leadership Detroit (Class XXXIV), a board member with Black Family Development, Inc., (Detroit, MI) and Vice Chair of the Oakland University Black Alumni Chapter.
